The Rattlesnake
Flash Fiction by Victor Lembrey
The rattlesnake was first spotted by the copier near payroll's file cabinet. After the understandable screams and nervous laughter, there was much debate about what to do. Some felt we should kill it, and of couse that led to debate about the method of killing. Some felt we should bring it outside, which naturally led to figuring out how and who and where and all those other pesky details. Some felt we should call the zoo, but no one was bothering to find the number, so the notion just kind of floated above us, unused.
I decided to go home. I pretended to be terrified of rattlesnakes. It was awesome - like a snow day in summer.

In the 1930’s, a sales campaign began for children's clothing featuring zippers. The campaign praised zippers for promoting self-reliance in young children by making it possible for them to dress in self-help clothing. The zipper beat the button in the 1937 in the "Battle of the Fly," when French fashion designers raved over zippers in men's trousers. Esquire magazine declared the zipper the "Newest Tailoring Idea for Men" and among the zippered fly's many virtues was that it would exclude "The Possibility of Unintentional and Embarrassing Disarray." Obviously, the new zippered trouser owners had not yet discovered the experience of forgetting to zip-up.
